Writing Inspired by…
August 2, 2011
… lack of inspiration.
Feeling rather uninspired lately to write. The last couple of months have actually been pretty exciting (?) and tumultuous but nothing that could be blogged about, so there.
Actually, I HAVE been writing – a storyline of my own, wonderfully inspired by the clever writing from City Hunter. Yes, still on it and it’s KILLING me that I have to delay the last 2 episodes because the husband has been stuck at work all week. So tempted to ditch him for my own pleasure now… ugh the temptation! [Edit: We've since finished the series... ahhh, SO satisfying. More on that another time!]
Scriptwriting. I’ve actually been quite fascinated by it recently. Haven’t we all seen dramas or movies and wished the storyline had gone some other way? Or saw a twist a mile away and wailed “OH PUHLEEZE!” Or bloody fantastic dialogue that made you go “Man, how did the writer think to present it that way?”
And most of all, it makes me think who ARE the writers at Channel 8 Mediacorp?? Is it THAT hard to write a show with good dialogue? There’s a reason why Japanese and Korean dramas create cultural waves. But Channel 8 dramas? Nada. Why so uninspiring? To the extent of being PAINFUL to watch. Where do I sign up to be a Channel 8 scriptwriter yo? I’ve got some freakin’ fantastic ideas in this little head of mine.
Europe plans are shelved to Q4 because something doesn’t feel right about going on such a last minute trip in the peak of summer; plus, we have an influx of visitors in August keeping us plenty occupied.
We will still be travelling in September though because we received a wedding invitation to…
SEOUL. O-M-G. Like, the land of Lee Minho. HELLO?!? Annyeong hasaeyo!
It’s like it was written in the stars.
Convo the other night with the husband:
Me: Hey if you can’t extend the weekend trip, I can stay on and travel by myself right? Was talking to M the other day and he said S would SO not let him go cos he’s erm, very friendly… hahaha.
Him: You’re not supposed to extend the trip by yourself without me and go looking for Lee Minho!
Me: …But that’s THE WHOLE POINT!
I’ve been doing my research and if we do end up with a week’s worth of holiday, I’ve got plans to go to the DMZ, Bukchon Village, a Han-ok homestay, a Little Prince village (Eee!!), amongst the usual touristy stuff. It will also be during their Chu-Seok, which is a combination of Thanksgiving/Chinese New Year/Ching Ming festival. I’m kind of wishing I have the guts to ask one of our Korean friends if I can self-invite to their celebrations, just to observe how it’s all done.
ANYWAY. Anyone got a good book to recommend? I’m reading Jodi Picoult’s “House Rules” and Malcolm Gladwell’s “What the Dog Saw” and “Blink” while sidetracking on Sudoku these days. I used to be a fan of Jodi Picoult but “House Rules” is taking awhile to get me on-board so I keep putting it down. “What the Dog Saw” is okay – the writing and topics make easy-reading, but not riveting. Unlike “The World is Flat”. Or Harry Potter.
Or even good blogs to recommend, anyone? Blogs are great – they’re like little golden nuggets of reading when you find one that’s really good. Unfortunately, I think I’ve also picked up on the deplorable habit of short attention span, which makes reading an actual book tedious work these days.
Which explains the random blog post and how a zillion thoughts are cross-firing all at the same time.

short attention span — i know what you mean. pretty much why i’ve become more of a film buff than an avid reader(like i used to).
I’m reading The Age of Reason (Jean-Paul Sartre).
Consider “Let The Right One In” if you feel like a good foreign film.

Mediacorp has become a factory line. Cut cost, chope chope. Churn with the same template. Different cast same script. Don’t ever join. Will suck your life out.
There are however good string credible production companies out there who do good work and understand everything begin with a good script!
Try writing! Start with a story ….
